How to Decorate Your Home with Darker Colours

There are many people out there who only stick to decorating their home with lighter colours as it is simply the ‘safe’ choice to take on. However, bringing in some darker shades can seriously make a difference in ensuring that there is an overall better sense of balance to be achieved. For some people, they are even going to want the dark colours to be dominant in the space. Ultimately, this is all going to come down to you and what you would like to achieve the most. So, if you have always been a little bit more wary when it comes to decorating your room with darker colours, let’s take a look now at some of the things that you are able to do.

Put in Some Thought First

To begin with, there is not going to be much point in starting off without a clear plan of action in place. Otherwise, you are going to end up in a situation where you are not really sure what you are doing, and you are simply throwing the dark colours into the space in the hope that something is going to work out when there is every chance that you are going to be making all sorts of different mistakes. Whether you are going to work with a professional or not is up to you, but it is always going to be a good idea to speak to someone who knows all of the basic principles of interior design and is going to be able to properly advise you on this front.

Stay Bold with the Paint Choices

There are many people who are more than willing to experiment with all of the various accessories that they could bring into a space, but there is no way that they really want to do much in terms of the paint. However, you should certainly look to be bold on this front as well. This does not necessarily mean that you are going to want to paint every single wall in darker colours. However, what you could look to do is to have an accent wall that really helps the space to stand out in the way that you would want it to.

Balance the Light with the Dark

Just because you are mainly going to be focusing on all of the darker colours out there, this does not necessarily mean that it should be your one and only focus. Instead, it is going to be a much better idea that you are balancing off both the light and the darker colours. This way, you are going to be able to create more of an equal impact in the room that you are decorating. Also, it helps to ensure that there is not too much of a sense of dominance, and you are not going to overwhelm the person in the room in a way that could otherwise be considered unpleasant. For example, you may have certain features that are going to be decorated in darker tones such as black internal doors.

Think of the Lighting

The more dark that you are going to bring into a space, the more important it is that you are going to consider lighting it in the right way. Ultimately, this means that you should be lighting up the areas that could otherwise be considered gloomy in one way or another. It is always going to be worth thinking about the different accent lighting that you are going to be bringing into a space and not simply focusing on the overhead lighting. This way, it is going to help with the overall sense of balance to a much greater degree.

Try an Upcycling Project

One of the different options that you could easily look to take on board is an upcycling project. In this way, you can bring in the darker tones onto a piece of furniture right from the outset, creating much more of a bold and beautiful impact. Ultimately, this gives you a great deal of control in creating the style of furniture that you want the most.

There you have just a few of the different means that you have available of using the darker colours that are available to you in order to create an interior design effect that has a beautiful sense of balance attached to it. Ultimately, now is going to be the time to attempt it and see how you do.
